There’s a certain admiration I have for the Australians. They stick to their guns. Premium is the message and premium is the product. They ploughed on through a massive down turn in exports, not helped by the strong Aussie dollar and a global recession; coming out the other side with a stronger domestic market and a quality driven, pioneering wine industry ready to re-explore exports. Looking at the latest export report from Wine Australia; value is outstripping volume: it increased 15% to $2.56 billion versus an 8% rise in volume to 811 million litres. The average value of exports is also rising, sitting at $3.16 per litre; the

McHenry Hohnen in Margaret River… Memories from our travels!
In Keeping with this theme here’s a short piece on Harriet and Anthony’s trip to Margaret River last March, the wines they tried and the craic they had. Anthony does a World Trip annually taking in Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. I (Harriet) was lucky enough to join him for the NZ/OZ leg of the trip. As with all these trips you need some down time… we took a 2 day break from the wine-tasting marathon and swam with sharks (well I paddled!) in the surf spots (see above) around the points of Margaret River. With me

At least the Aussies will never take themselves too seriously!
Just been handed the latest in a string of articles about LarryCherubino’s Wines. No hint of ‘spice’ or ‘succulent tannins’ mentioned in these awards! This time an off the wall ode to all things Aussie. Bottom right under the wine that took the title ‘For Services to wine porn’ you’ll see our own AdHoc winning ‘Services to truth in wine labelling’ for their ‘Shiraz from the middle of everywhere’. They’ve obviously got some good ground there too though, cos it’s fairly delicious…

Aussies excel on the wine front after Ashes foray!
To celebrate Australia Day yesterday I rummaged through the rack and found a bottle of Wise Wine’s Sea Urchin Shiraz 2008 DELICIOUS! Pity I couldn’t say the same about my dry bit of crusty pizza (which no amount of extras from the cupboard could improve). Notes of violet, blackcurrent and hints of peppery spice came through, but most of all it was refreshing that this wine tasted pure. No hint of too much human interference just the grapes doing their bit in the bottle. Why can’t more Aussie wines be like this.

China’s wine production to overtake Australia’s in the next three years
Interesting story from the Australian newspaper The Herald Sun here, claiming that the rapid rate of increase in Chinese wine production means that they will overtake Australia within three years. Interesting too is the sub heading: “Growth poses no threat to Aussie imports”…
